1991 Honda CRX HF
The Original 50MPG Car! Hybrid Economy Without
Compromises!
UNMOLESTED RUST-FREE ORIGINAL CAR
187,618 original well-maintained miles - no
leaks, no oil burning - LOTS of recent work!
1.5 litre HF port fuel injection engine - 5 speed manual wide ratio transmission
January of 2008 Virginia State Inspection - New Windshield, Tires, O2 sensor,
Battery & Alternator
Fresh Clay Bar and Professional Detailing In And Out (Hand-Waxed to a Shine!)
Recent brakes, exhaust, timing belt and tune-up (NGK Platinum Plugs et.c.)
ORIGINAL WHITE PAINT AND NO RUST IN BODY OR PANS - NONE ANYWHERE!
Bumpers intact and damage free front and rear.
All trim present aside from H on hood. Glass perfect.
Slight paint spidering on top of front bumper.
Car was used in tandem with an RV, still wired to hook up. Minor incursion
with towbar setup in hood - crease along front tuck at emblem, which is
why it is missing. Front airdam and bumper unbroken, airdam slotted for
towbar in front.
Headlights are sandblast-free, possibly newer
replacements, no clouding et.c. All lights work!
Brand new unpitted windshield, and original
absolutely fade and crack free blue dashboard. Only trim fading is in rear
compartment and slightly along tops of doorpanels. Much better than the
average.
Paint is merely scuffed on both front corners
of bumper. I didn't think it merited a quickie touch-up. Rocker panel trims
are as clean as front and rear airdams. Wheels are straight, tires are new
within 5,000 miles.
A few parking lot dings here and there but as
you see, nothing worth mentioning. Slight dents in hood and roof due to
extremely lightweight thin-gauge panels used on the HF to keep weight well
below 2000 lbs.
You would be hard pressed to find such a clean,
un-rice-rocketed HF as this one with no rust, under 200k miles et.c. for
anything like this price.
In the rear hatch, nearly as much room as a
much larger hatchback car. No backseat in the CRX, small storage bin underneath
handle. I moved 200+ lbs of 1940 LaSalle transmission and rear axle parts
in here the other day and had plenty of room to spare.
Dashboard, accessories and instruments from
the perspective of the rear hatch. Note working domelight above-left.
Original seats have new covers and extra overlay
cushions beneath. Seats are the most worst for wear bits in the car. The
HF had super light seats with unique mountings, so not any Civic seat will
interchange. With the Buy it Now comes a pair of 1991 Prelude Recaro-like
seats to put in, upholstery is worn but not torn, about the best seats you
can put into any car, plenty of excellent back and side support and just
the right amount of bolster. Adapter brackets will have to be fashioned;
I don't have the time at the moment to do this prior to when I want the
car retrieved, but they ought to fit nicely in the back.
Steering wheel is almost like new with very
little grip wear despite the miles. Steering the HF is like having a car
with perfect power steering due to the lightweight car at all but full stop.
I put 6 gallons of regular in it on Friday and
ran it to well north of Richmond and back. Note the fuel gauge has not moved
off the F. Despite heavy foot driving I imagine I didn't burn one gallon
of gas in the 44 miles travelled.
Relatively new Sony AM/FM/MD/CD with changer
control, remote and high power conveys. Great speakers in the doors.
The original HF motor. No leaks, no oil burning,
freshly changed a few hundred miles ago. Recent full service. I did not
do an engine bay detail just to show you how clean this car is without it.
The clutch takes some getting used to. 1st is
a moderately tall gear. It seems as though someone did a clutch job and
did not machine the flywheel adequately. To make it absolutely perfect,
put a fresh clutch in it and new engine and transmission mounts to stabilize
the drivetrain. None are broken but all are apparently original. Now - you
can drive this home to California and for many miles to come before addressing
any of that, and you'll likely find that there's many more miles left to
go. I'm just overly picky about such things and wanted to be very up-front.
There's little else about this car to be so up-front about...
To restore the car's fuel efficiency and put
the Check Engine light out, I put a new Bosch oxygen sensor in on Friday.
The original was still on the exhaust manifold, dead as a doornail.
who am I/why am I selling ?
I'm Chip Lamb,
Professional Pre-Purchase Inspector, Automotive Journalist and lastly, the
sole parts supplier to the Vintage SAAB community. I work from home and
have no commute worthy of this high efficiency tool. I found it languishing
locally and saved it from an uncertain fate of kids with Sawzalls and B16
engines in their garages. I'm not necessarily averse to this solution, this
is the CRX with the best potential for a track/drift/autocross CRX due to
the lightweight body, last year of production and rust-free body. However,
with the popularity of Honda and Toyota's new fixation on Gas/Electric Hybrids
being so popular, yet having the liability of expensive batteries and other
electronics to achieve the same fuel economy of this 16 year old super-economy
car without much of the sporty feel and performance of the original CRX,
I imagined that one of the many Allentown, PA to Manhattan or Fredericksburg,
VA to D.C. commuters might find this far more interesting than a $20,000
+++ Hybrid.
I personally find the car far more pleasant
than those who would call the HF gasping or anemic. It is as sporty and
quick as a slightly warmed over '60s SAAB Sonett V4 or III with the same
or better handling and the aforementioned unbelievable fuel economy. Maybe
I just like slow sports cars, but it does trip my trigger, and if you're
not familiar with the CR-X and think it's just a Civic econobox, you have
definitely got another thing coming.
payment/shipping terms
Payment is due by certified funds not more than
7 (seven) days from auction close. No exceptions unless cleared
with me in advance. Accepted methods of payment are cash or certified/teller's
cheque.
Shipping is due within 14 (fourteen) days from
auction close. No exceptions unless cleared
with me in advance.
For the early-bird Buy it Now purchaser, if
you live along the southern US states, I have a transporter coming here
from Southern California who can pick the car up *this coming weekend* and
deliver to you for well under $1,000 should the auction end early with Buy
it Now and payment is received before Thursday around noon of this week.
Contact me during the auction if this
is your intent so I can get the ball rolling sooner rather than later. If
auction goes to the end without Buy it Now, something can likely still be
worked out during the following week for the winner if so desired. I am
unsure of prices for transport to the northeast, midwest et.c. I recommend
you call Manuela at Arizona Auto Transport - 800-903-8475 and tell her you
are picking up from Chip Lamb in Richmond, VA, you will get the best deal
possible - they love me. Otherwise, fly or train in from whereever with
tags and drive it home - lots of fun to be had.
