What you will see here and in the photos beneath
is perhaps the lowest-mileage example anywhere of the first iconic 70mph
scooter of its type. Known as the 'Spacy' in the rest of the world (except
Japan where it was appropriately dubbed the 'Freeway'), the CH250 Elite
came out in 1985 and lasted but a few years before it was replaced by the
Helix and other long-wheelbase scooters not nearly as well-loved by the
buying public.
Still on its original Dunlop 4.00x10 tubeless
tires front and rear with almost no dry-rot, I've done quite a bit of work
on this scooter, including a full fluid change, new battery, freeing up
the throttle cables, tightening up the air intake path and more - much of
which required a lot of disassembly. Since that time I've put over 50 road
miles on the scooter at speed and verified that it performed flawlessly.
The scooter is not detailed, merely cleaned
- the original paint shines with very few small chips and scratches throughout.
The typical front 'bumper' is lightly cracked on the right front - find
one that isn't. There's no rust, it's never been left out in the rain, et.c.
The New York 1988 inspection sticker tells it
all. The original old man owner of the scooter bought this bike in Manhattan
then retired to Maryland where he rode it throughout his small gated community
until he was no longer able to ride. An acquaintance of mine acquired it
from his estate, it passed through the hands of a friend of mine and then
to me.
As you can see, both gold wheels are nearly
flawless. I've lubed all the brake pivots during the service and they work
without complaint.
There's a very slight amount of surface rust
at the weld points on the luggage rack. That's it.
Another shot of the same thing, just a little
different vantage point.
The original seat is flawless and VERY comfortable.
Under the seat is the gas tank - good for about
70 miles or so of cruising.
Note the unfaded condition of the switchgear
that always faded on these.
A little closer.
When the instrument cluster was out, I changed
the clock battery - good enough for another five years!
The original VIN sticker.
As you can see, the bike has never been dropped
or wrecked, just carefully enjoyed for not quite 1,900 miles.
ok, if this is so great... why am I
selling?
I'm whittling down parts of my collection of
unique original stuff - to buy more stuff, hey, the thrill of the hunt and
all that. I recently thought this would be the ultimate race weekend paddock
cruiser, so I tried to find a way to tie it down in the enclosed trailer
with the car and spares et.c. in there and couldn't find a way short of
adding more brackets and stuff than I wanted to. I'll just keep riding my
vintage Moulton Mark III bicycle at VIR and Summit Point ... or pick up
a small bore Honda twin that is easier to secure. This scooter is just too
fragile to risk having an incident in the trailer - or anywhere else - and
is not terribly conducive to tying down.
If you have a CL or CB350/360 vintage Honda
twin or similar bike in similar condition, I'm all ears. I am picky about
condition and originality as you see above and in
the recent sale of my father's exceptional BMW K100RS, so be mindful
of this when offering me a swap.
I did a lot of work to this bike to make it
safe and reliable, so there shouldn't be much more to concern yourself with,
but if there is, an original Honda service manual conveys with the sale.
Should you hit the Buy it Now, I happen to have
two of the last of the best Continental tires from Europe and some new tubes
as well that will go with Buy it Now or at a small additional price to the
high bidder who merely meets the reserve.
payment and shipping terms
Payment is required in cash or by cashier's
cheque no later than seven days after the close of auction unless alternate arrangements are made with me in advance.
I know you can't ride this home unless you're
local (in which case I'll happily ride it to you). Pickup by you or your
carrier must take place within fourteen days of auction close unless alternate arrangements are made with me in
advance. I am also going to Spring Carlisle and the auction Friday 24-25
April - with Buy it Now I will deliver it to Carlisle free of charge or
for a reasonable amount should you simply hit the reserve. If Buy it Now
is used, I will accept cash on the ground at Carlisle as payment as well
as an advance cheque that must clear by the time I hand it over to you.
Inspections happily welcomed. Fraudulent bidders
et.c. are not and will be prosecuted immediately and with the maximum harshness
my attorney can dish out. If you have low/no/negative feedback, please get with me before you bid.
That ought to do it - thanks for looking, bid
with confidence, see my feedback.
