63,650 original miles from new on this first
and rarest of the "classic" SAAB 900s.
5 door hatchback in original Marble White (not repainted) with Green GLE
deluxe interior
NO STRUCTURAL, UNDERBODY OR SERIOUS RUST
(A little surface rust in engine bay and a few small blisters throughout)
Car still sports original stainless steel wheelcovers and
165SR15 tires on 5" steel rims. Soccerball, Inca and Shelby alloys
will fit this GLE, or convert to 1981-87 900 front hubs and use any of the
alloy rims from that era. Though not evident from my pictures, yes, this
car sports a 2-vent hood as did all 1979 and early 1980 900s.
If Buy it Now is used, a set of decent European headlamps
will go with the car - see below!
The GLE package included a plush velour interior with rear
seat headrests, power mirrors, the full width wheelcovers and some extra
trim and badging. In addition, this car had as options the manual sunroof,
air conditioning (currently inoperative as most B motor AC cars are!), and
a 2 speaker Blaupunkt AM/FM/Cassette with Auto-Reverse. Sticker price on
the invoice which I have with the car was over $11,000 in 1979!
Being that this car is over 25 years old, it qualifies for
antique registration in many states, Virginia included. And you thought
you couldn't handle a vintage SAAB - here you have a super early 900 which
qualifies! I stuck some German export tags behind them for a laugh. Note
also the original dealer's sticker on the hatch.
The antenna is the original from the Blaupunkt stereo package.
A 1979 900 did not come from the factory with any radio at all!
The car is not missing any trim other than the small strip
in the rear bumper which may yet be available from SAAB and if it is not,
it is the same as all 1979-82 900s as well as 1979-80 99. I also started
to rub out the original Marble White paint and the front clip came out as
lustrous as it was when nearly new. A little time with the claybar and compound
and the car will look stunning. I also had some touch-up paint custom matched
to take care of the odd rock chips. There is no need to repaint this car.
There is also no evidence of any body damage to the car over
its 25 year lifespan. Apart from the odd parking lot ding it is straight
and true as it was when it was new.
Inside, the seats (with headrest pillow inserts), dash and
carpet are in very good shape. The sisal mats were a SAAB dealer accessory
at that time. One is pretty worn out but still attractive. When was the
last time you saw a green knee bolster in a 900? Dash is crack free and
supple.
Another shot of the dash and instrument panel through the
open roof.
The back seat is in similarly good condition, the center seatbelt
was still in its plastic protective bag from new!
The cavernous rear hatch area of the classic 900 5 door hatchback.
Note the rare SAAB logo dealer accessory trunk mat (included with Buy it
Now, see below) for 1974-80 hatchback cars, the rear headrests, and enough
room for a small sofa!
The same view with the rear parcel shelf in place and the
back seat up. Still enough room for lots of groceries!
The B motor with Bosch K-Jetronic CIS fuel injection. I put
a Bosch red coil and a full tuneup in the car.
Unlike the later cars, this 900 still has a 4 speed manual
transmission. The car gets up and goes and will do 80mph with no problem
(professional driver on a closed course, of course!) 8-)
Why am I selling?
I bought a 1978 95V4 (that's right, 1978) from
northern Sweden. I only bought this GLE as I could not find a wagon at that
time. While I like the early 900 and could have lots of plans for it, I'd
rather use the money to tidy up my new find and hot up a V4 for the wagon.
As I'm very busy with my vintage SAAB parts
operation for the 2-stroke and V4 cars as well as 99s, I can only have
so many toys of my own, not to mention space constraints and the prospects
of a move in the near future. My loss is your gain - this is a unique car!
I'm making a trip to go to a vintage SAAB meet in Vermont in 2 weeks and
to pick up my wagon, so if you live along my route, read on, you may get
it delivered free or nearly so!
Winning Bid / Buy it NOW extras
The winning bidder will get a completely new
exhaust system with the car - I don't have time to fit it unless you opt
not to have me deliver it to the northeast in 2 weeks and your pickup is
pushed back to the end of August. The front muffler is leaking, making for
a buzzy ride especially with the windows open! This is the last known complete
new exhaust system for a 1979 5 door 900 in the USA (no catalytic converter),
so unless you are planning a 16 valve turbo transplant, this is very valuable
stuff to have. The winning bidder who does not use Buy it Now will get a
very favourable shipping rate if he or she lives in the northeastern USA
and wants it brought to him/her during the period of 12-14 August.
***If Buy it Now is used,
my entire collection of spare parts, new and used, will be included with
the car. This includes a collection of K-Jetronic parts applicable to this
car, a complete EGR intake manifold (rare!), a new fuel accumulator (rare!),
a decent set of European headlamps, the aforementioned trunk mat, a newish
"Heatshield" sun blocking windshield screen custom made for the
1979-93 900, and lots of other odds and ends. I might even clean out some
of my surplus stock into the hatch, so who knows what you will get with
the car! IN ADDITION - IF YOU USE BUY IT NOW - and if you live in the northeast
and can meet me on or very near to my route between Virginia and central
Vermont in 2 weeks' time, I will deliver the car at NO COST.
If you have questions about these options or
any other inquiries, please e-mail me
or call 804-829-9040.
Payment and Shipping Terms
Payment is due within 7 (seven) days of auction
close unless alternate arrangements are
made with me in advance. If I am delivering the car to you in the northeast,
I will accept payment on delivery in cash or certified funds. Otherwise,
please mail payment to me as soon as possible and I'll forward you the title
and bill of sale.
Shipping or pickup should take place within
14 (fourteen) days of auction close, again, unless
alternate arrangements are made with me in advance. I suppose you can
drive the car home if you live somewhat close, but I make no assurances
as to its ability to make a long highway trip. Your call. If you can wait
until nearly the end of August and have paid in advance, I will deliver
the car to you within a 300 mile radius for expenses plus a little extra.
I will be away from the 12th until the 16th
of August, and again from the 18th to the 24th for the National SAAB Owners'
Convention in Washington State, so I will be unavailable during that time
to deliver the car or meet you for pickup.
